A success story of a special kind
With a noble RAID again enough storage and performance for post production.
Constantin Film upgrades its post production with Starline RAID hardware
TopRAID systems - powered by NEC - prove their worth in operation
Media workers take up a lot of space when using modern film formats. Even before the storage depots of the film production company Constantin Film ran out of air, those responsible turned to the system house "MELTING MIND". Together with the long-standing Starline partner, the specialists have ensured that the creative power is given room again.
- New Fibre Channel infrastructure
- High performance TRM310-24R from TopRAID
- New Brocade Switch
- Three new JBODs with 230 Terabyte
Post-production via RAID brought to life
Starline accelerates video editing and post production
New techniques such as 4K resolution and HDR high-contrast motifs require an extremely large amount of storage space on docked storage systems. At the end of 2016, Constantin Film faced a challenge with its aging installation: Every few days, employees had to move data to create enough space on the 60 TB old system.
In addition, several workstations had been added simultaneously over the years, creating an additional transmission bottleneck in the network. A Thunderbolt 3 storage system purchased as an add-on could not sufficiently stimulate the workflow. The supervising system house "MELTING MIND" from Lübeck therefore contacted Starline to develop the best possible solution for the customer.
Power RAID for post production
In this sense, a system came out that ultimately outperformed the old system by potencies. The infrastructure was drilled from 4 to 16 Gbps Fibre Channel - including the switch from Brocade. The technicians also chose the high-performance TopRAID TRM310-24R.
In combination with three downstream JBODs, it could provide a total capacity of 230 terabytes. The system also offered reserves for a later upgrade. Furthermore, a major hurdle was overcome by the technicians involved: Xsan. The storage system, which was actually designed for Linux, Windows and VMware, should definitely be integrated into an XSAN topology suitable for Apple.
Despite all the challenges, the migration to the new periphery went off without a hitch - thanks to the dedicated efforts of the technicians on site. The planned move could be bridged with local storage media. In short: After only one day of downtime Constantin Film continued its successful work on the new storage system.
