How to rescue an old storage system without data loss
The shock was enormous: In the “Storz Medienfabrik” the Linux server and still in addition the easyRAID storage system were no longer accessible. The already 13-year-old RAID system contained important data as a central storage medium without which nothing would run in operations. In short: a disaster for the media workers from Esslingen, who feared data loss.
However, the owner-managed full-service media agency had never replaced the easyRAID system, as it was simply not necessary. On the one hand, it ran very reliably and on the other hand, it also completed the tasks assigned to it sufficiently quickly. The performance-hungry work, such as video editing or rendering computer animations, is carried out by the Storz specialists at high-end workstations anyway. As a result, these access separate and decentralized RAID storage.
The standstill at Storz, however, led directly to the original distributor of the RAID system in question: Starline Computer GmbH from Kirchheim unter Teck. Starline, however, not only has an extremely large stock of spare parts (including older systems), it also employs experts who are well versed in this field. For this reason the chances were good for Storz to survive the mishap without data loss.
