The concept “Digital Textbooks” from the Verband Bildungsmedien e. V. (Educational Media Association) had to be realized. The participating educational media manufacturers therefore agreed on a central virtual book shelf. Your digital products should be offered there in a uniform format.
Therefore, teachers and students should be able to manage books from different publishers centrally and use them conveniently. However, this should be possible online and offline. No problem, for a server virtualization of Starline with TopRAID and VMware.

Digital textbooks for dedicated teachers and students
The hosting provider synergetic AG, however, managed the server virtualization together with Starline. For this reason, the solution included customized storage systems and leading virtualization software. (With VMware vSphere and Veeam Backup & Replication.)
The TopRAID M100 storage systems, which were specially developed for virtual environments, consequently served as central storage space for the digital books in the data center of synergetic AG. The VMware-certified storage hardware was therefore the “heart” of the virtual library.
The entire quantity of digital books from over 20 different publishers was finally accessible from everywhere. For this reason, a practical solution was created from the imaginary “cloud” concept. Centralized and secure, yet completely flexible: And the schools and students could finally manage, read and use books from different publishers on one digital shelf.
With VMware to the virtual TopRAID bookshelf
The TopRAID systems support all essential features of VMware and also have a vCenter plugin. Therefore a seamless integration into the virtualization environment was guaranteed. However, these systems have been operating reliably for several years. They could thus easily be moved and integrated into a new data center.
Our solution
Making “digital textbooks” finally available in a uniform format – this is without doubt a practical solution. Students and teachers can use their books from any computer with or without Internet access – either at school or at home.
After all, a modern data center, central data storage and a sophisticated virtualization concept are indispensable prerequisites for this successful solution.

A format. A technique. With “Digital Textbooks“, schools, teachers and students could manage, read and use books from different publishers on a virtual shelf – online or offline. This made about 3,000 titles available. Around 74,000 teachers and pupils took advantage of the offer. (In the meantime the system has been transferred to another project.)
