A price comparison portal from Germany needed a new storage solution for its product database in order to be able to safely withstand future data growth. The requirements of the comparison platform for the new architecture were: The storage system should be highly available, flexibly scalable and of course cost-effective. It also needed to be able to use a highly secure, shared and S3-compatible object storage via cloud.
After all, product comparisons with their unbelievably many data sets, branches and updates quickly generate huge amounts of data. While traditional NAS storage can meet these criteria, managing them is often at the expense of productivity because it requires a lot of intervention.
The responsible managers were quickly convinced of the many advantages offered by the ceph file system based on several storage appliances. After all, the slim servers offer further advantages besides the ceph advantages, which are due to the ARM technology used as well as the smart hardware developers.

Ambedded Mars 400 as private cloud backend
With Ambedded, customers benefit from the ingeniously simple user interface UVS, for example, as well as the extremely small footprint and great efficiency of the Mars 400 servers. And this solution could also provide the required S3-compatible object memory.
Starline therefore set up a locally usable ceph file system for the product researchers and also provided online S3 cloud storage for sharing the data. The customer then began its migration to a Mars 400 Ceph cluster with three 1U servers, which have since been expanded to ten. They have a mixed SSD and HDD assembly with a total of 130 TB of usable capacity.
Ambedded Mars 400 proves itself in use
As a result, market analysts can now present all products on the web with high performance and make updates from anywhere. And should the UVS meanwhile show a lack of storage space, the technicians put further appliances into the rack. Ceph will then independently take care of the distribution of the additional resources.
In this sense: Mission accomplished.
