LTO support with Areca controllers

New LTO functions for Areca controllers – subsequently provided
Areca – our supplier for Thunderbolt storage and RAID cards – has provided additional features to the new PCI 4.0 controllers from the ARC-1886 series with 8/16 ports: The tri-mode RAID adapters now also support LTO tape drives.
Areca developers took customers’ requests to heart and combined RAID and HBA functions in a single PCIe card in the new firmware version. To do this, the RAID adapters automatically put connected tape devices into pass-through mode so that LTO drives can be used for backups via directly connected SAS ports. Of course, the remaining ports can still be used for SAS/SATA/NVMe RAID function.
Areca controller with LTO capabilities
RAID products that do not include this LTO functionality would thus require an additional HBA in the server. Areca’s ARC-1886 series enables LTO tape drives to be operated, for example, via Apple’s new Mac Pro.
Customers could even use an Areca ARC-1886-8X8I (via its two external ports) to run a JBOD and a tape drive simultaneously. Thus, IT servers with these RAID controllers become simultaneous storages for SAS/SATA/NVMe and LTO.
