How to find the right ports under Veeam

Port sharing under Veeam: What is it and where can I find it?

Veeam offers comprehensive data protection solutions for companies. This includes the recovery and management of data in IT environments, whether virtual, physical or in the cloud. But for the Veeam software to work optimally, it must have the right network shares - and that inevitably leads us to port shares.

What are port shares?

Since every programme that communicates via the network uses certain ports, they must be released accordingly. So when Veeam backs up or restores data, it communicates via various ports between its components, the backed-up servers and the storage systems. For this communication to function smoothly, certain ports must be enabled in the firewall. If not, the firewall blocks the connection via the ports that Veeam uses for communication.

Which ports do you need to open for Veeam?

The ports that Veeam requires depend on the specific components you use and how your IT environment is structured. Here are some examples of the most important ports:

  1. Veeam Backup & Replication:
    • TCP port 10001 to 10300: These ports are used for communication between the Veeam backup server and the proxy servers and repositories.
    • TCP/UDP port 135: Is required for RPC communication.
    • TCP port 443: For secure communication via HTTPS.

  2. Veeam Backup Agent:
    • TCP port 6160: Communication of the backup agent with the Veeam backup server.

  3. Veeam Cloud Connect:
    • TCP port 6180 to 6183: Used to connect to the cloud infrastructure.

  4. Veeam Enterprise Manager:
    • TCP port 9392: Used for the Enterprise Manager web interface.

This list is not exhaustive, as various Veeam components may require additional ports, depending on the configuration and protocol used.

Where can I find the complete port details for Veeam?

Veeam provides detailed information on the required ports in its documentation. How to find the relevant port shares:

Veeam User Guide: The official Veeam documentation contains a comprehensive list of all required ports. You can find it directly on the Veeam website under the manuals for the respective Veeam version. Here for Veeam Backup & Replication 12

However, it is even easier via this app:

How do you set up port sharing?

Once you know which ports you need to open, the configuration is usually done in your company's firewall. This can be done via the firewall integrated in Windows or via special firewall software such as Cisco, Fortinet or pfSense. The following steps are common:

  1. Open the firewall console: Open the settings of your firewall.
  2. Create new rule: Create a new rule for inbound and/or outbound traffic.
  3. Specify port: Enter the ports to be opened.
  4. Select protocol: Select the correct protocol (TCP or UDP) required for the port.
  5. Activate rule: Save and activate the rule.

Done! Now Veeam can access these ports without restrictions and perform its backup and restore tasks reliably.
