In its now serial variant of SCSI, SAS is one of the most important interfaces in the storage sector. In the third version, the transmission rate is already at 12 Gbps and further standards have already been adopted.
As a point-to-point connection, SAS offers a stable connection that can be implemented using many different connector shapes. Nevertheless, SAS enables the networking of many components such as hard drives, SSDs, tape drives or entire storage systems. To this end, the standard also stipulates that each SAS device is assigned its own globally unique address.
SAS enterprise storage with choice
SAS also allows operation via an expander. This enables up to 128 end devices to be cascaded and bundled on a single SAS cable. The user can achieve even greater capacities by using a fanout expander connected in between. Line bundling and dual porting are two further features that facilitate the handling of SAS and improve system performance.

This iSCSI-to-SAS adapter connects individual tape drives - without servers - to the Ethernet over long distances. For example, it allows remote sharing of SAS tape drives via 10GbE Ethernet networks. The highlight: the sophisticated box achieves these services at a lower cost and at a higher speed than a comparable solution with separate servers.
Compared to native Ethernet band devices, this solution is also more cost-effective, as the administrator requires fewer switch ports overall. It is also more efficient, as power, cooling and cabling requirements can be reduced.
