Virtualization in the datacenter: the foundation of modern IT
Why virtualize?
Virtualization is a technology that makes it possible to transform physical hardware into virtual systems. It plays a central role in modern data centers and has revolutionized the way IT infrastructures are managed. But what exactly does virtualization mean, how does it work and why is it so important?
Virtualization offers numerous advantages, which include both technical and economic aspects:
- Efficient resource utilization: multiple VMs make significantly better use of a physical server.
- Cost savings: By consolidating servers, users require less hardware, saving space, energy and maintenance.
- Flexibility: Virtual machines can be easily created, modified, moved or deleted. This makes the IT infrastructure more adaptable.
- Reliability: Virtualization makes backups and replication easier to implement, so that data can be restored quickly in the event of a failure.
- Scalability: Companies can quickly add new virtual machines as their needs grow without having to purchase additional hardware.
What is behind it?
Imagine a single physical server running a single application. Traditionally, this server would often be underutilized because its capacity far exceeds the requirements of a single application. With virtualization, multiple virtual machines (VMs) can run on a single server. Each of these VMs functions as an independent computer with its own operating system and applications.
How does virtualization work?
The key to virtualization lies in the software known as the hypervisor. The hypervisor separates the physical hardware from the virtual systems and ensures that all VMs can efficiently use the required resources such as processor power, memory and storage space. There are two types of hypervisors:
- Type 1 hypervisors (bare-metal): These run directly on the hardware and are particularly powerful. They are often used in data centers.
- Type 2 hypervisors (hosted): These run on an existing operating system and are easier to install, but less efficient.
